History of the Property
Brydeswood Ranch is now being offered as a bulk sale of 272 acres. There are 23 subdivided lots ranging from 4 to 17 acres, with a total density of 84 home sites, being sold together. The property includes a 4200 square feet historic manager’s stone house built in 1860. The sprawling acreage provides expansive vistas of the Pacific Ocean, the island of Nihihau and sunsets.
Located on the southwest edge of the island of Kauai, Brydeswood Ranch is steeped in the island’s rich history and shares the same favorable climate as the adjacent Olu Pua Gardens and the National Tropical Botanical Garden to the southeast.
Brydeswood’s namesake, Walter McBryde, was an environmentalist, politician, philanthropist, developer and entrepreneur. He pioneered the sugar and pineapple industries on Kauai in the late 1800’s. In the early 1900’s, he built an extensive system of reservoirs and irrigation including the present day Alexander Dam and the first two hydroelectric plants on the island, one of which is still in operation today. He later purchased the mountain lot Kukui’olono and when he died left the bulk of his assets in trust to maintain the Kukui’olono Golf Course and Park for the enjoyment of island residents and visitors
